This song is a plain and simple ode to a land I once loved. Though it's certainly not my best song, I like the fact that, in spite of the flowery language, every word is true. It serves a warning that there are bass and drums on this album and that my singing has improved only slightly since my first one.

Heartland into my heart

Stephen R. Coffee ©2004

Comes a meadowlark to sing a song of spring and then

Comes a bit of sun to make the song come true

Comes a drop of rain to make the grass turn green again

Comes a gust of wind to take away the dew

(Chorus)

As the red sun slowly sinks toward that great horizon

And calls the full moon out to do his part

Gravity and harmony and light call out to my song

From the heartland into my own heart

Once upon a time a mighty ocean met the dawn

One so full of life it builds our limestone walls

Once the buffalo knew saber-tooth and mastodon

Once or maybe twice I thought I heard their calls

Under summer's sun the grasses ripen red and gold

Underneath the ground grow miles and miles of roots

Under harvest moon Coyote sings his song of old

Understanding none, I'm sure he tells the truth

Dust blows in your eyes

Ice falls from the sky

Wind circles and cries, cries

Every scoop of earth a billion beings holds within

Every breath of air a million histories

Every prairie song recalls the beat of moccasins

Every time around, another mystery
